Norton Announces Victories for D.C. in Coronavirus Reconciliation Bill, Thanks Chairwoman Maloney and House Leadership

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today the victories for the District of Columbia she got in the Committee on Oversight and Reform's (COR) portion of the coronavirus reconciliation bill, which will be marked up by the committee on Friday. COR's portion of the bill provides $755 million in retroactive CARES Act fiscal relief to the District, and it treats D.C. as a state, city and county for new fiscal relief. The estimated total funding for D.C. in COR's portion of the bill is over $2.2 billion. Last year, D.C. was deprived of $755 million when the CARES Act treated D.C. as a territory instead of a state for fiscal relief. Last Congress, Norton vowed to fight for the retroactive funding and for the treatment of D.C. as a state, city, and county for any new fiscal relief because D.C. provides each level of service, both of which she achieved in COR's portion of the bill.

"It would be difficult to overstate the importance of these victories for D.C.," Norton said. "This bill is fair to D.C., and will save lives by increasing the breadth of D.C.'s coronavirus response efforts, it will save jobs by increasing the number of small businesses that will survive this pandemic, and it will provide relief to working families. I thank Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and House leadership for working with me to treat D.C. fairly, and I look forward to the markup on Friday."

A budget reconciliation bill cannot be filibustered in the Senate and therefore only requires a simple majority for passage in the Senate.
